About
About Open Legal Aid
Free, plain-English legal help — start here. Here's exactly what that means, and how we keep it free.
What this site is
Open Legal Aid publishes free, plain-English guides and self-help tools for people forming an LLC themselves. We are not a law firm, we do not provide legal advice, and we do not review or file anything on your behalf — we explain the process and give you free tools (a formation checklist and an operating agreement generator) so you can do it yourself, correctly, without paying for something you don't need to.
How we make money
Open Legal Aid is free to use — no account, no paywall, no cost. If you decide you'd rather have a paid service handle the paperwork instead of filing yourself, some of the links on this site are affiliate links: we may earn a small commission if you sign up through them, at no extra cost to you. That referral revenue is what keeps the guides and tools free.
- Earn a small referral fee if you use a paid formation service through our links
- Review each service independently before listing it
- Update guides when state requirements change
- Clearly label all affiliate links and disclose the relationship
- Recommend services we haven't reviewed
- Accept payment to change our rankings or recommendations
- Hide fees or use dark patterns to push you toward a paid option
- Pretend to be a law firm or give legal advice
Not legal advice
Nothing on this site is legal advice, and using it doesn't create an attorney–client relationship. Laws and fees vary by state and change over time — for advice about your specific situation, consult a licensed attorney. See our full Terms of Use.
Data and privacy
Our tools run entirely in your browser — the checklist and operating agreement generators don't send your business details to any server. See our Privacy Policy for details.
